‘Double Infinity’: A love letter to ever-changing life from Big Thief
The trio return with a triumphant new album.
Dainty as a locket and a fawn in a flower field, lead singer Adrianne Lenker and her astonishing accompaniment unleash their beautiful talent in the shape of a new album. Big Thief released their sixth studio album, Double Infinity, under their familiar and highly celebrated record label, 4AD.
With a lineup of only nine songs, which span a heart-wrenching 42-minute run time, Double Infinity creates a morphed reference to Big Thief’s past and present. Known for their soft folk style and lyrical storytelling, Lenker, the lead lyricist, revolves the album around relationships and intimacy in all its shapes and sizes, both romantic and platonic. This symbolises more than just hypothetical love, as it marks the rebirth of the band since their long-time and co-founding friend and bassist, Max Oleartchik, departed from the band in 2024. Continuing as a trio, consisting of Adrianne Lenker, Buck Meek, and James Krivchenia, Big Thief celebrate love and life through their new album.
While every track differs from the next, all have the recurring feeling of hopefulness and melancholy, transcending the audience from one track to the next. Track two, Words, describes the inability to express true feelings when fleeting moments are brief, which was recently accompanied by a music video directed by the lead singer’s talented young brother, Noah Lenker. Following on this, the opening track Incomprehensible, along with Grandmother (featuring Laraaji), which were both released as singles on the album’s run-up, feature breezy instrumentals that emulate the feeling of floating along a glistening stream, while reminding us that sometimes things change, and that’s okay. Songs such as Happy with You and Los Angeles (also released as a single) present a warmer hue than the album’s other songs, as the lyrics feel sincere and less bittersweet than songs such as No Fear, conveying a mantra of emotions.
Finally, the love letter of an album ends with How Could I Have Known, a homage to fond memories, a reflection of an everlasting moment, and a final embrace before letting go, with Lenker’s signature lyricism and poetry.
In celebration of the album’s release, the band will embark on a UK and European tour, titled the Somersault Slide 360 tour, starting in April 2026. This tour will embark European-wide, as they travel to Oslo, London, Manchester, Dublin and Paris, among a broad list of others. This promises to be one of their best tours yet, as they play music old and new, along with their best-loved hits, such as Velvet Ring from their 2016 album Masterpiece.
This album offers the audience the opportunity to reflect on their own wave of emotions and moments of life through the music, marking Double Infinity as an interactive piece of a puzzle and a modern masterpiece of the genre.
