Bee Bee Sea excite and delight in psych-y concept EP ‘It’s All About the Music’
The EP sees the same song sculpted in different ways, from McCartney-esque rocker to one-minute trippy mantra.
Have you ever listened to a song and thought, ‘I like it, but it could do with being a bit faster? A bit louder? A bit more punk? Maybe a touch more economic with its tempo?’. Enter Bee Bee Sea, who have put out a three-piece EP of the same track, each time remodelled into something entirely different, and entirely unique, with its own zany video to boot.
The first, Slow Music, is a lovably lo-fi, downtempo affair that’s endlessly catchy at barely a minute in length. The second piece, which sees the band in makeshift medieval armour for the video, is a King Gizzard-ish psych rocker, and an undeniable indie classic in the making. The third and final composition, Fast Music, is a real punk tour-de-force; somewhere between a bedroom demo and a final, polished track.
All three are consistent in their basic structure, but take wildly different approaches, creating an EP that’s as dynamic and ambitious as it is deeply familiar. It’s an interesting, conceptual take on the extended play, and one I salute with both respect and messy hair.
It’s All About the Music is out now.
