Since releasing her debut single I’ve Been Saying This in 2021, SOMOH has gained the attention of many in the industry. Not only have Clash, Line of Best Fit and BBC Radio 1 all championed her work, but she has also struck up a friendship with Irish songwriter and producer Joel Johnston (aka Far Caspian), who she collaborated with on the 2020 track Warning Sign.

In her debut EP, A Plan to Get Home, SOMOH has combined elements of bedroom-pop and 90s indie rock to create a compelling tracklist that is both personal and nostalgic. Dealing with themes of love, hardship, friendship and family, SOMOH’s music feels as though it could be the soundtrack to any coming-of-age story. With Joel Johnston also producing and mixing her EP, A Plan to Get Home is a sonically stunning debut that channels the likes of Beabadoobee and Alex G.

The first track Anything, which was first released in October of last year, remains one of my favourite tracks in the indie singer-songwriter’s repertoire. It’s a gorgeous exploration of the scariness of falling in love – one that is filled to the brim with achingly beautiful lyrics and sweet, tender vocals. While the contrasting angst that is rendered through the song’s climactic moments gives it a human touch that is both refreshingly honest and relatable.

There is an innocence to SOMOH’s lyrics and an intense softness to her sound, which makes listening to her work a joy in every sense of the word. Through her vulnerability and sonic intensity, the listener is regularly pulled into moments of self-reflection as SOMOH musically tells the world that no one is alone in how they feel.

On I Know You Care, SOMOH achieves this by reflecting on how people’s intentions don’t always match up with their actions; before the song’s cathartic climax causes heartache to erupt within the listener. Meanwhile, My Body Is A Friend encourages a cleanse of the negative emotions we often attach to our bodies through its upbeat chorus and honest lyrics.

A tidal wave of emotion often washes over you as you listen to SOMOH’s work, and nowhere does this happen more clearly than on Reflections. A quiet, meditative track featuring gentle guitar strums and a reflective piano melody that swallows you whole.

SOMOH then finishes her gorgeous account of the transitional stages of life with the title track, A Plan To Get Home, which serves as a powerful end to a special debut. One that leaves a lasting impact.

A Plan To Get Home is out now via Tiny Library Records, the independent record label curated by Joel Johnston.
