On Thursday, Leon Thomas played a sold-out show at O2 Academy Birmingham, bringing his MUTTS DON’T HEEL Tour to the city.

The set-up was simple but considered. A sparkled backdrop caught the light behind him, while Thomas spent much of the set with a guitar in hand. Alongside a live band and low lighting, it kept the focus on the music rather than the production. He moved through the set without much interruption, letting songs run into one another rather than breaking the flow. It gave the performance a steady, unforced pace, more about continuity than peaks.

Vocally, he stayed close to the recordings but allowed space for variation, particularly in the quieter moments. Tracks like Breaking Point and Crash & Burn felt more open live, with small shifts in phrasing and timing. The emphasis stayed on control rather than projection.

The crowd mirrored that tone. There was energy, but it remained contained — more attentive than reactive. For much of the set, the room stayed relatively still, with people focused on the stage rather than responding outwardly. It suited the performance.

Musically, the set moved across R&B, neo-soul and more guitar-led textures, with the live arrangements adding weight without changing the core of the songs. His background as a writer and producer comes through in that detail—everything feels placed rather than improvised.

By the end of the night, there wasn’t a shift in scale or tone. The performance held its level throughout, finishing much as it began — measured and self-contained.

There’s a clarity to his performance style: assured without excess, and consistent from start to finish.
