Spacey Jane make their long-awaited return to the UK with a sold-out show in Nottingham
The band bring their latest album ‘If That Makes Sense’ to a packed Rock City.
Entering Rock City, there was a noticeable air of anticipation amongst the crowd as Spacey Jane return to the UK after three long years of waiting. Celebrating their latest stellar album release, If That Makes Sense, and joined by the incredible Mia Wray and the band, this was already stacking up to be a night to remember.
A special shoutout deserves to be given to Mia Wray and her band, who pulled off an amazing opening act, providing a wonderful taste of Australian indie joy to set the mood for Spacey Jane.
When Spacey Jane made their grand entrance, what really stood out was the band’s genuine connection with each other and the crowd. There were no rockstar airs, just four people who clearly love making this music together. bassist Peppa Lane and drummer Kieran Lama were an unstoppable rhythmic force that had everyone moving, while guitarist Lochlan Watt’s shimmering lines wrapped everything in that signature Spacey Jane warmth.
Starting the show with their hit Through My Teeth from their most recent album, as frontman Caleb Harper sang, the crowd spontaneously lit up the dark venue with an electric pop. It was one of those spine-tingling moments that you remember for ages. The entire room seemed to hold onto that feeling the entire night as the band played through their wonderful catalogue of old songs and new. This gave a great impression of Spacey Jane’s incredible discography for long-time fans to appreciate the classics and for newcomers to experience for the first time.
You could see them sharing smiles mid-song, dancing with each other back and forth, feeding off the crowd’s energy, which provided a heart warming experience amongst the crowd.
As a long-term fan, the night’s most potent moment arrived during the encore. As the opening, melancholic chords of Hardlight rang out, a hush fell over the crowd. A sea of phone torches flickered on, piercing the hazy stage light, turning the room into a constellation of shared emotion. It felt like a collective catharsis led by a band that specialises in wrapping existential dread in the most beautiful of melodies.
They finished on the explosive high of Booster Seat, leaving everyone a sweaty, happy mess. Spacey Jane have this special talent for wrapping life’s anxieties in the warmest, most uplifting guitar pop. They didn’t just play a gig; they gave us a much-needed dose of pure happiness that left a lasting impression on tenured fans and newcomers.
If you aren’t a fan already, we hope you’ll at least give Spacey Jane a listen, as the unique four-piece band write deeply human emotions into starry summertime anthems that resonate with so many people. Spacey Jane will be heading out into Europe to continue the festivities. If you are able to do so, the band are very much worth your time.
