Far Caspian – the project of Irish musician Joel Johnston – has announced his latest album Autofiction will be released on 25th July via his own label, Tiny Library Records.

Diving into themes of mental health, self-forgiveness, recovery and gratitude, and recorded entirely in his own studio, where Johnston himself produced, mixed, mastered, and played every instrument on the LP, Autofiction is set to be Far Caspian’s most direct and diaristic album to date.

Speaking on the album, Johnston said: “People will sometimes comment on songs of mine, saying ‘I have no idea what you’re talking about’. I wanted to make a record that was a bit more heard. I even made my vocals louder than I usually do.”

Alongside this announcement, Johnston also shared the album’s lead single First Day – a sunny and heartfelt love song filled with warm guitar riffs and uplifting percussion: “I wrote ‘First Day’ one morning after dropping my partner off at her new job. She was in a transitional period where everything felt so daunting and raw. At a similar time, I was starting a new medication for my Crohn’s disease that required me to go to the hospital and get infusions every eight weeks,” Johnston shared. “The first time I went, my partner was the one to drive me. I wrote this song as a reminder of how we have each other’s backs and best interests at heart, regardless of how unsure we may be about what’s ahead.”

While Johnston has spent years writing, producing and recording a full band production all on his own, Far Caspian is performed live as a six-piece. You can catch Far Caspian on a run of UK and EU headlining dates this September, as well as a run of US headline dates throughout October and November.

Autofiction is out July 25th via Tiny Library Records.
