Jay Som announces new album ‘Belong’
The announcement comes alongside the release of new track ‘What You Need’.
Los Angeles-born indie-pop artist Melina Duterte, professionally known as Jay Som, is back with her brand-new project Belong, her first full-length album since Anak Ko, released over six years ago in 2019. Raised on rock and pop-punk, her journey has progressed from self-producing music in her bedroom to producing and engineering emotional, heartfelt tracks and collaborating with other big artists from the likes of Lucy Dacus, Troye Sivan, and beabadoobee.
Belong, which is set to be released on October 10th, features guest spots from Paramore’s Hayley Williams and Jimmy Eat World’s Jim Adkins. The album features the newly released What You Need, as well as earlier tracks Float, Cards On The Table and A Million Reasons Why.
What You Need is a vibrant yet sombre track that describes the emotional balance between adoration and annoyance, caring deeply for someone while also dealing with frustration or being let down by them. Lyrically, it is a call to action that love and support has to go both ways for a relationship to work. With light beats, bright guitars and layered drums, the instrumentals seem to tell the tale of adoration whilst the lyrics express the annoyance in the situation, a deep and intentional mislead of topic.
Jay Som’s music combines the complexities of love, loss and life with a vibrant beat that keeps you grooving throughout the track.
Belong is out October 10th via Lucky Number.
