The Kent alt-rockers have dropped their fantastic debut single alongside the signing announcement.
Kent four-piece studio20 have dropped their debut single Penny Drop. The song is a dark, twisted and desperate Midwest emo-inspired anthem that will appeal to everyone who loves crashing guitars and emotionally charged vocals. Alongside the exciting debut single, the band have also announced their signing to tastemakers Communion, home to Esme Emerson, Cardinals, Wunderhorse and more.
Speaking about Penny Drop, the band said, “The song was conceived in winter 2025. I would try and write a minute’s worth of new music every day — I was not in the best headspace. It was very cold. That demo hung around for ages. There was something uneasy about it.”
It’s easy to feel that cold, dark headspace when listening to Penny Drop. If that sounds like a criticism, then it’s not. It pulls you in with its twinkly opening notes before bursting into a more expansive, distorted soundscape. It recalls a slightly more demented version of American Football and their Midwest emo sound. studio20 aren’t afraid to be more direct, and have packed an almighty number of sonic punches into a slender two-minute runtime.
The chorus features gorgeous call-and-response vocals. The beauty and simplicity of the voices crash against twisting and raging guitars. An intense juxtaposition captures the key dynamic that makes studio20 so captivating. The push and pull of the sounds colliding are similar to Clarity-era Jimmy Eat World. Speaking of the chorus, frontman Isaac said that it “came about from a gut feeling, more focused on the sounds than the words.” He continued, saying the song was about “the penny drop feeling when you realise something isn’t what it used to be.”
Finally, the band intentionally tried to leave listeners wanting more. Isaac adds that the ending is deliberately set up to keep the listener eager to hear what may be coming next: “Even the ending we left painfully unresolved to tease the listener.” If teasing was the intention, then studio20 have pulled it off brilliantly with Penny Drop. I’m certainly eager to hear more.
Penny Drop is out now via Communion.
