Today Austrian-Brazilian artist Viji announced her highly anticipated debut album So Vanilla alongside the release of her latest single Sedative – a hook-filled, fuzzy track that is the perfect introduction to her forthcoming release.

Speaking on the track, Viji said: “I wrote Sedative about a girl. She’s like a breath of fresh air, and there’s a fine line between friendship and attraction that was hard to navigate. Usually, when I meet someone like that I wanna ‘be’ that person, but this time I wanted to be with her.”

Accompanied by a surreal music video directed by Gilbert Trejo, the son of American actor Danny Trejo, Sedative’s layered guitar melodies and sleazy brand of shoe-gaze rock already indicate that Viji’s first album will further cement her as one of the UK’s most exciting alternative artists working today.

Having previously released music on Dirty Hit before signing to Speedy Wunderground, Viji has since built up a loyal fanbase, earned support from the likes of BBC Radio 1’s Introducing Jack Saunders and Nels Hilton, and fostered a great working relationship with Speedy Wunderground label head Dan Carey.

So Vanilla was predominantly recorded in London in partnership with label head Carey, who is also a four-time Mercury Prize nominated producer (Fontaines D.C., Kae Tempest, Wet Leg).

Every song on the album had a different writing process, with some seeing her and Carey playing guitar chords together for hours, and others coming more organically from late-night ramblings at home.

In celebration of the release, Viji will play several in-store events and live shows, with her headline show at The Shacklewell Arms in London being her first since her sold-out performance at Third Man Records in March.

Live Dates:

10th August – The Shacklewell Arms, London

28th October – Jacaranda - Liverpool

29th October – Jumbo - Leeds

30th October – Rough Trade - London

31st October – Resident – Brighton

So Vanilla is out October 27th via Speedy Wunderground.
