Life on Tour: The early morning after the late night before

James Douglas Clarke, aka C Douglas, the former frontman of THE GOA EXPRESS, takes us through a typical morning on the road, back in the band.

Wake up bright and early by the side of some road in either a Travelodge or Premier Inn. Shake the person sleeping coverless in the single bed next to you and tell them that it’s time to get up and get ready. Groan and wipe the sleep away.

Seconds disappear and, before you know it, you’re pulling on the same clothes from the night before. It takes a moment to find your socks. It’s always the socks. Enough time to brush your teeth but not enough to shower. Priorities.

Ask yourself why checkout is this early and succumb to the fact there’s nothing you can do about most things in life. Smile and thank the individual at reception and proceed to walk through the automatic double doors into the car park.

Stare at the sky and see very little. Drag your feet across the silver tarmac and collapse into the same seat as yesterday. Leave the roundabout and join the motorway. Long roads always look the same in the morning. Service stations have more personality at night. Move onwards. Travel to god knows where with only a few personal items and a broken recollection of the night before.
