From making TikToks to playing acoustic shows in fan’s homes, singer-songwriter Devon has been using the power of social media to make a name for himself in the online indie world. But we think it’s time his name is known by the whole world, and most importantly by the indie industry’s big leagues.

Drawing in a fanbase of like-minded, isolated and confused teens and twenty-somethings, Devon speaks to the thoughts and feelings of a generation with his catchy, and often upbeat songs. He knows what it’s like to be dealing with life’s growing pains, and he knows exactly how to articulate it for everyone who can’t quite find the words.

He may be singing about the most emotional, frustrating and lonely moments of his own life (and somehow ours too), but he makes sure you can still have a wee dance, head-bop or dramatic singsong while you confront these everyday issues. And luckily for us, his new single SMILE is no different.

With a heavier soundscape and a deep piano melody, the track has a real sense of longing to it, despite the very Devon beat that makes it impossible not to move along to. The melodic motifs weigh you down, forcing you to drag your feet as you confront the feelings attached to your lost love. While, as always, the lyrics capture every thought and feeling you’ve ever had, continuing to show Devon’s impressive songwriting skill: “It’s hard to think of you / falling hard for someone new / but the more I laze around / that’s exactly what I do.”

His lyrics truly live in their own impressive world and just go to show how in touch he is with those around him. No matter what he releases, Devon just seems to get it. And so we can’t wait to see what he creates next.

Devon’s second mixtape Normal Local People is out January 26th.
