Following the big release of their most recent album, The Sound a Body Makes When It’s Still, in August, Hot Mulligan are back with a B-side single I Don’t Think It’s the Right Time for Emojis.

This release coincides with their European and UK tour that started on February 20th, and it sees them hit fifteen cities, including the prestigious Roundhouse in London. Following this, they will also head out in the States this summer for headline shows and festival appearances. Support for these will come from Joyce Manor, Saturdays At Your Place and Koyo.

When speaking about the new release, Tades Sanville states, “Zealotry is probably going to kill us all. Which is fine, guess. It’s no better or worse than any other kind of annihilation. There’s some people of faith who understand not everyone has to care what their book says, and that deserves thanks. But judging by how many people are showing up for the mega-church Sunday spectacular, complete with pyro and wirework, the meek are not likely to inherit the earth.

Joel Osteen locked people outside during Hurricane Harvey. Kenneth Copeland uses his church to buy planes, fancy cars, and houses. The camel can apparently fit through easily through the eye of the needle. David Easterwood is a pastor who runs an ICE field office on the side. Half of the archdiocese’s job is to cover for paedophiles.

I think some people can do right by it. They’re nice people with a big nice ghost and I don’t mind one bit. But I think most people are just so afraid to die that they can look past the evil thing their church has become.”

This song perfectly encapsulated the frustration with the overbearing nature of religion in the United States and how it is forced onto others. The line “You’re forced in the water you refused to drink” is a perfect metaphor for baptisms and how this can be forced upon you without much choice.

The desire for separation of a secular state is truly reinforced in “Separate your church outta my fucking state”. It demonstrates the frustration from the non-religious communities within the United States who feel the First Amendment, which requires a separation of church and state, is not currently being followed through. This is an outstanding commentary on this and is in no way subtle about the political unrest from the United States.

From the outside looking in, you truly grasp and understand how normal people are suffering due to the imperiousness of religious zealots. The song is a warning and a cry for help to people to wake up and see through the lies of how religion is being projected within the United States and how it is now being used as a political pillar for policy that is affecting people in their day-to-day lives.

I Don’t Think It’s the Right Time for Emojis is out now via Wax Bodega.
