Fairly new on the scene, Birmingham band Overpass are already garnering attention with their riveting, out-there brand of indie-rock music and it is not hard to see why. With the band’s third single Stop the Clock gaining a position in Spotify's Fresh Finds: Rock and Hot New Bands playlists Overpass are most certainly on a roll this year. With that being said, it is no surprise they are rocking and rolling on as they prepare to release their new single Changes which is without a doubt one of their best singles to date.

Changes is an indie-rock track that explores the forever changing emotions one feels when in love and is an intriguing listen.

With bold instrumentation that is unapologetic in nature, Changes is truly a one-of-a-kind release from the Brummie four-piece. 1

The introduction of this latest release is fairly simple but at the same time undeniably infectious. For the first four-bar of the track, listeners are hit with a groovy bass riff accompanied by nothing but a clap. The riff sets the pace for the rest of the track and provides a swing that will have listeners rocking to and fro.

Still remaining in the intro, at the four-bar mark a thumping kick drum landing on every beat enters to accompany the bass riff. This adds a subtle impact to the track and an edge. Furthermore, we get the rapid strumming of an electric guitar. Said guitar is far wider in the mix than the bass is, which sits right in the middle of the stereo field. The result of this is the creation of a profound sense of space in the track. It is at the eight-bar mark after a minor pause that we then enter the main verse which is fantastic.

Amidst the crashing of cymbals and the ticking of hi-hats, the vocals of Changes are crisp and delivered extremely clearly. The vocals remain, for the most part, raw and unprocessed which is refreshing and bold. It is during the chorus where the vocals become distorted and more aggressive as the lead vocalist questions “What took you so long? Well you left me standing / We could’ve moved on that’s enough for me baby”.

The lyrics of this latest release are incendiary and represent the thoughts of someone who is emotionally confused and lost. Changes takes the listener on a journey through a whirlwind of emotion and seeks to acknowledge the highs as well as the lows of love.

Overall, Changes is an interesting listen and another quality single from Overpass; with such an interesting and refreshing sound one can only wait with sheer curiosity as to what their next single will sound like. Until then, we have Changes.
