Pixey comes out on top with ‘Take Me On’

Indie-pop Princess Pixey reclaims control on her empowering new track

Pixey, the Liverpool-based, self-described ‘indie Britney Spears’ is certainly one to have on your radar if you’re a fan of pop music with a little bit of an edge. Her latest offering consists of a gentle invitation for an entitled man to, well, take her on. The combination of angry lyrics and upbeat instrumentation characterises the song as a perfect balance between an empowering statement and a light-hearted dance track. Co-produced by Pixey herself, Take Me On has a bit of a Spice Girls-esque feel to it; the simple, repetitive chorus reminiscent of classics like Who Do You Think You Are?. Accompanying the track is an energetic music video that sees the Parbold-born Pixey take herself on in a boxing ring.

When listening to the track, it’s easy to assume that her addressee is some kind of former or potential lover who won’t give her the time of day. Whilst I don’t know the ins and outs of her lyrical thought process, I’d say it’s more likely that it involved a general venting of frustration towards various people who refuse to take her seriously — a frustration that is all too familiar for most women within the music industry. There’s a vagueness to the lyrics that establishes the track as a universal anthem for anyone who feels underestimated; a cry for the overlooked to take back control of what is rightfully theirs. The lack of specifics gives the song an accessible, timeless quality as, regrettably, there will most likely always be someone in your life who will make you want to scream these lyrics in your car ride home with the windows rolled down.

Take Me On is the latest single released from Pixey’s upcoming EP Sunshine State, which will drop on 29th October via Chess Club Records.
