Shimmering space-pop delights in Spirits of Saturn’s ‘Transfigured’

The band share their new single.

Transfigured is the latest release from London-based goth-synth cult-pop band, Spirits of Saturn. The track follows two initial singles put out by the band last year. And, just like them, this one is as weird as it is catchy.

Transfigured is everything I want in an ‘alt’ track, to use an awfully overused buzzword. Referencing the likes of darkwave mainstays like Clan of Xymox and Joy Division, the track skips merrily between multiple genres, somewhere between art-pop and gothic synth. All the while, the vocal efforts of the group remain as nonchalant and yet so full of emotional toil as is warranted for this kind of music.

It’s a track steeped in cosmic, occult-ish majesty – “Here lies / All covered with flies / My world / Transfigured. These are the kind of cryptic, vaguely unsettling lyrics I want in a dark, synth-y treat! Think the esoteric words of an early Ghost mixed with the experimental, digi-psychedelia of Jeff Lynne. Rad.

The future is a little murky for Spirits of Saturn. They have some gigs planned – a headliner at Jaguar Shoes in London coinciding with Transfigured’s release – and maybe a few EPs on the way. Nothing totally concrete. But, somehow, that uncertainty is speckled with flecks of stardust, and wreathed in fresh, intriguing sounds from the interstellar wavelength.

Catch them live in London on March 9th, tickets here (it’s free!).
