Veps are one of those bands that, upon your discovery of them and initiation of their music, you quickly realise what a good sound this Norwegian four-piece seem to possess. If it’s either their unique sound as alt-rock bands go, their love of crude DIY riffs and sounds, or the fact they seem to have so much fun doing it all, something will attract you to them. Adding to an already extremely successful year, with the releases of Greetings from Peru and So Speak turning many heads and helping the band gain many a new fan, Veps are now tantalisingly close to the release of their sophomore album Dedicated To, which releases June 14th. In preparation for this, the band have yet another single release to show off with Break & Entry.

The song starts with some pretty harmonious vocals from the whole band, something of a recurring theme in Veps songs, and one that’s always a delight to hear. Perhaps something that is not a recurring theme and is quickly noticeable after this section is its heavy piano usage, which from this point seems to make up the crux of the song’s sound. It’s a noticeably more piano-driven song by the band, certainly seeing more usage than the previous two single releases for their new album. It allows for a much calmer tempo across most of the song when it desires to be so. Contrast with the sudden entrance of a roaring and powerful chorus, which is brimming with those lo-fi DIY rock riffs and vocal work that the band have made their forte.

Speaking on the topic of their new release, the band said: “‘Break & Entry’ was written with a lot of inspiration taken from relationships between both lovers and friends - it’s about the empty feeling you get after giving everything you have to someone, and hoping to receive something back that never comes.”

Overall, it’s yet another shiny addition to Veps growing and impressive oeuvre. It’s another emotionally charged coming-of-age tale from the band full of styles and themes the band is quickly making their own. It’s another ode to the strong bond of four friends that has seen them fine-tune their wonderful sound over the past few years. Expect to see the fruition of that fine tuning with the release of their newest album: if the singles seen so far from it are anything to go by, then it’s going to be one to get excited about.

Dedicated To is out June 14th via Miktam Records.
