From the very intro of Vona Vella’s new single Over and Over, I was hooked. The thumping drumbeat and groovy guitar melody set the perfect stage for a rocking track that examines the mistakes we’re willing to overlook to maintain peace in our lives.

The song is an anthemic duet which tells the story of two people stuck in a cycle of resentment. The crux of the issue is the incessant rug sweeping and conflict aversion at play in this relationship. While this may seem like the path of least resistance, by never addressing the underlying problems or pet peeves, they end up stuck in an endless loop of disappointment. “And it’s filling me with dread / Thought you were the best” they sing, affirming that ignoring the flaws in those we love can sometimes cause more harm than good.

This inner conflict is brilliantly emphasised through the contrast between the vocal stylings of lead singers Dan Cunningham and Izzy Davis. Dan has a grounded assertiveness to his voice, while Izzy delivers her lines with silky softness. But hearing them come together makes for a truly magical listening experience thanks to their electric vocal chemistry.

This is the kind of track that would feel right at home on the soundtrack of a coming-of-age film with its nostalgia-infused instrumentation and ruminitive lyrics. It had become a newfound favourite that I will be recommending to every indie rock fan I know.

Vona Vella is out now via Strap Originals.
