Wyatt release their infectious debut single ‘Morning’
The Manchester based indie rockers have dropped their infectiously irresistible debut single.
I can’t get Morning out of my head. It’s been stuck in there all day and there is simply nothing I can do about it. I had the pleasure of seeing Manchester’s very own Wyatt supporting Frog in their hometown just a couple of weeks ago and Morning was stuck in my head for days after the show. I’ve been craving a recording ever since and it’s perfect timing that the band have just dropped it as their debut single for everyone to hear.
The band are a traditional four piece made up of two guitars, bass and drums. Lead singer Harvey O’Toole sings with the melodic, rough around the edges tenor of the great Lou Reed. Musically, the band certainly takes after The Velvet Underground’s sharp and direct brand of songwriting. Their secret weapons though are their joyful shared group vocals and guitarist Emily Mason’s euphoric trumpet playing. There’s plenty of bands out there with a stage full of members writing disparate, dense music but Wyatt are far more keen to stick to a simpler formula. Because the band aren’t afraid to strip things back and let their words and melodies take centre stage, the addition of Mason’s trumpet on the final choruses of Morning serves to really take things up a notch and send the sugary sweetness of the refrain into overdrive. It’s the same approach that was featured so well on Rowan and Friends’ I’ve Been Thinking About Jesus earlier in the year. By not drowning their songwriting in tons of sounds and instruments, it makes something as simple as a trumpet refrain sound so huge, glorious and joyous.
It’s this simplicity that really makes Wyatt so exciting. It isn’t just that they have a pure energy and catchy choruses, it’s their raw approach to back-to-basics songwriting. Like fellow Manchester stalwarts Westside Cowboy, the band pride themselves on writing simple songs that are as easy to sing along to as they are to fall in love with. The “woo’s” in the chorus are mirrored at the start and end of the song in a way that makes it just impossible not to want to hammer the repeat button to cycle through it all over again. Once you’ve heard Morning once, it just makes too much sense to want to hear it all over again.
Wyatt are on tour with Westside Cowboy across the UK and Europe this Winter before playing their own headlining show at The Abbey in Manchester.
Morning is out now via Heist or Hit.
