Our Landscape is Now, the sophomore effort from Adam Smyth’s one-man project The New York Salsa Company, is eight tracks of raw, defiant energy and dark, twisted disassociation. The album misdirects you at every turn, pairing mean and grungy rockers (lead single This Machine Won’t Stop, Bug Zappa) with droning, Nevermind-esque moments of introspection (Defloater, Proper Posture, Carpet Burn). Far from offering a respite to the crying havoc, these quieter instances strangely unravel the mind like a slow-acting poison.

The result works, though; the strange fever dream from a mind cerebellum-deep in the electronic and experimental music scene. The album had to be remade from scratch after a break-in in 2022 that cost Smyth his laptop. You wouldn’t know; Our Landscape is Now sees the same kind of fresh, mad aggression you’d find on an unsigned debut. It’s truly independent and, really, how common is that these days?

Our Landscape Is Now is out now via Bad Soup Records.
