To craft a project that contains as much talent and showcases just how much potential an artist has is an impressive feat — and one that Jessica executes perfectly

The debut EP by Jessica Luise, Going In Blind, is a fantastic first foot forward by a new artist.

Hailing from Manchester, she’s another fresh face in the British indie rock scene. What makes Luise a standout, however, is an impressive track record of writing songs that keep listeners engaged and backing it up with fuzzy instrumentals that do not disappoint.

If the opening track, a.m., serves as an introduction to Jessica Luise and her sound, it’s going to keep listeners wanting more. a.m. sounds as if it belongs on the AC channels of the late ’90s and early 2000s and deserves to be played loud. All about the lack of certainty where things may go with a fling and being vulnerable about the emotions that stem from the situation, it’s an opener that finds its knack in storytelling and instrumentals that form a main-character type ambience.

The subsequent track, Stargaze, is a dreamy number that feels like a hazy dream in a liminal space. As she sings about the stars possibly aligning to make the moment that she might have missed, the instrumentals align just as seamlessly.

Three Steps Ahead begins as an acoustic arrangement but the accompanying instruments kick in just as fast as any rush of emotions. Laying out her parents’ advice for anyone who will listen, it’s tinged with just the right amount of rock sounds to make it worth listening to her reflections on what the advice means to her now.

Concluding with an acoustic track, Luise ends things at her most vulnerable. In her bedroom resides her secrets, her experiences; her whole being. She tells you about it, and if you’re trustworthy you just might be lucky enough to indulge in what she has to offer. It doesn’t matter if you have baggage, Jessica will be there waiting to take it all in and work it all out.

It’s not uncommon to end a project with a softer, acoustic moment, but for Going In Blind it also serves as a testament that Jessica is a versatile artist who can take it down when the mood is right.

It’s easy to get lost in Luise’s storytelling and composition; something a lot of artists strive for. To craft a project that contains as much talent and showcases how much potential an artist has is an impressive feat. The likelihood of Jessica translating something as concrete into a debut album is probable; it’s all in a matter of time. For now, Jessica Luise has her first major release into the world, and it’s one not to be overlooked.

‘Going In Blind’ is out now on all major streaming platforms.
