Westside Cowboy’s latest release, their second extended play following last year’s This Better Be Something Great, shows a staggering amount of resolve for a group’s second effort.

Its opening track, Strange Taxidermy, is indeed strange; a droning five-minute composition that sits somewhere between The Velvet Underground & Nico and Florence + the Machine. It’s a druidic, trance-like ballad, while follow-up Can’t See is pure, revved-up indie rock.

Album track, Don’t Throw Rocks, has shades of indie greats like Sam Fender and Wunderhorse. Latest single The Wahs returns to a Reed-ian sneer with flavours of obscurists’ favourite The Orion Experience.

So Much Country…’s closer, In the Morning, sounds like a traditional folk composition far older than the musicians themselves. The result is a formidable EP that knows when to throw a right hook, when to pull back and when to simply entertain. It’s feel-good making the cardinal sin of quaintness, and it more than merits a closer eye on where the Manchester-based quartet go from here.

So Much Country ‘Till We Get There is out now via Universal Music.
