Home Counties announce new album and UK tour with ‘Humdrum’
The band is taking on a new sound, centred around messiness and chaos.
Humdrum is the band’s second single off of their second studio album of the same name, which is set to be released on October 24th this year via Submarine Cat Records. The track follows the band’s previous single, Spain, released in May of this year.
In contradiction to its name, the title track and album as a whole use contradicting beats and sounds to reflect messy feelings and miscommunications. The track is an unexpected blend of 80s retro electronic sounds and raw, folky vocal harmonies. This wacky texture is adopted from the very beginning of the single, which introduces a fuzzy synthesised sound rubbing against a purposefully offbeat drum.
The miscommunication of the track’s instrumental elements is reflected in the opening lyrics with lines like “I went ahead and misspoke” and “I blame that loose trap of mine”. The band even draws on their first album in the second verse with the line “I haven’t felt this way since ‘Exactly As It Seems’”.
The song’s bridge sees a slight shift in sound, incorporating a frantic keyboard in conjunction with the line “simmer down”, once again harking back to the overall theme of miscommunication between both elements and people.
Home Counties is set to tour the UK this Autumn for their upcoming album, including the band’s appearance at London’s Scala on December 2nd.
