Canadian alternative duo Sorry Girls are set to release their second album Bravo! this summer. Based in Montreal, Heather Foster Kirkpatrick and Dylan Konrad Obront are making waves in the alt-pop circuit with their playful take on darkness. Born out of a chance meeting in college, the pair have critical acclaim and personal growth to launch them into their next era with pride.

Bravo! is the follow-up to their acclaimed debut album Deborah and the Awesome Secrets EP. Kirkpatrick and Obront found inspiration in their early works in an eclectic mix of Fleetwood Mac, Roy Orbison and cult TV series Twin Peaks composer Angelo Badalamenti. They haven’t abandoned their inspirational roots, however, but have taken them to a new sense of self and maturity. Their sophomore effort sees influences ranging from Talk Talk, Perfume Genius, and even Carole King.

The lead single from the album, Prettier Things, incorporates Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors vibes with flowy synth, guitar riffs that ride alongside it, and airy vocals from Kirkpatrick that will leave listeners in a trance. Accompanied by a claymation music video, it’s as bright and artistic as the song it represents. An anthem for convincing yourself that there are better things ahead, it’s catchy and warm. As the first slice of what Bravo! has to offer, it’s an excellent offering to boot.

The album contains more introspection than their previous record which can be seen in the combination of lyricism and production styles. Kirkpatrick and Obront used to live together after their 2019 tour, however, their creative geniuses came back to life after returning to living apart. Kirkpatrick explains that “These songs are all about self-acceptance, self-affirmation, personal freedom, and letting go… There are a lot of lyrics about the creative process itself, identity shaping, and how those things intertwine.” These elements are also explored in more than one genre. Perhaps one that will throw listeners in for a loop; there is a breakup song with a country flair. Another features a disco-centric styling all about self-empowerment post-breakup. Perhaps it’s Sorry GirlsStaying Alive moment.

Although the record was made in separate locations, the distance sounds like a lie. Bravo! has the energy of live recordings and the collaborative efforts that any good band needs. Enlisting the help of Braids drummer Austin Tufts and labelmate Mitch Davis on saxophone, Bravo! will see Sorry Girls in a new light; perhaps one that shimmers brightly.

Bravo! will be released on June 2nd via Arbutus Records.
