Thundercat announces 5th album ‘Distracted’ with Lil Yachty collaboration ‘I Did This To Myself’
Shortly after the track dropped, Thundercat’s newest album was announced.

I Did This To Myself opens with Thundercat’s signature bass-heavy sound. With dialogue laced over the opening bars of the bass on this track (similar to No More Lies, also appearing on the tracklist for his latest album), it seems that, even without the beautiful layered harmonies of his vocals in the opening, he has such a distinct sound seen consistently throughout his discography, and you know exactly who this track is by within a few seconds of it gracing your headphones.
The keys in this song work seamlessly with the bass, complementing each other perfectly, and when Lil Yachty joins the mix of melodies and instrumentation, his voice complements the song’s composition. His deeper vocals add contrast to Thundercat’s high-pitched performance and, although I prefer the first half of the track, it still fits well with the rest of the vocals on this song.
No matter the song, the bass in Thundercat’s music will always take centre stage — even when collaborating with artists like Tame Impala, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. It makes his music incredibly interesting and keeps me coming back. It’s safe to say no one is doing it like Thundercat at the moment.
The same day that I Did This To Myself dropped, Thundercat announced his first new album in over five years. Revealing the tracklist on social media, three of the tracks are already out, with I Did This To Myself, No More Lies, and I Wish I Didn’t Waste Your Time already solidifying the album as one to look forward to. Releasing on April 3rd, Distracted is most definitely one of my most highly anticipated albums of the year — I can’t wait to hear it.
