It’s been ten years since Zayn Malik’s debut album, Mind of Mine, kick-started his solo career, a year after he departed from One Direction. In 2024, the ex-boyband member, who rose to fame thanks to his time on The X Factor, released his fourth album, ROOM UNDER THE STAIRS, and completed his first headline tour.

The Bradford-born musician has been open in the past about his struggles with anxiety around performing live solo, and had cancelled shows in the past, leading fans to speculate whether he’d actually make an appearance for his tour. During one of the UK tour dates, Zayn let the crowd know that fellow One Direction member, Louis Tomlinson, was in the crowd, leaving fans assured that they’d managed to squash their very public feud.

Fresh off the back of his seven-night Vegas residency, where he teased he had an “announcement” coming soon and played new material, Zayn has announced his fifth album, KONNAKOL.

On the album, the musician said, “It’s that time again, I have been lucky enough to make a fifth studio album… ‘KONNAKOL’ in its definition is the act of creating percussive sounds with one’s voice but what it means to me lies somewhere much deeper. It is a sound that holds the reverberation of a time before words existed. I have always drawn on my heritage for inspiration since I first started making my own music, this album is a development of that understanding, knowing more now than ever, who I am, where I come from and where I intend to go.”

First single, Die For Me, is out on Friday (6th). Zayn’s fifth album, KONNAKOL, is out April 17th via Mercury Records. Pre-order the album here.
