Annabelle Dinda is my current obsession artist. Some songs hit me exactly where my dopamine receptors lie, and this is one of them. Her lyrics are so painfully relatable that you feel as though she’s confronting you with something you don’t want to talk about yet.

Whatever You Wanna is a beautiful description of the limerence that follows new love. We are willing to become anyone or anything to get certain people to like us back. Listing completely different names — “Rita, Tina, Sandra or Mary” — perfectly encapsulates how we’re willing to forgo our own identity to get someone to love us back.

The winding melodies, folk-adjacent tone and unmistakable voice of Annabelle lead to a masterpiece creation. And, as an extra treat, a live version with the boys has been released alongside the studio version. This version is different enough that you can listen to both songs on repeat and enjoy them as separate songs without feeling like you’ve overdone the track for one day. It has a raw, kitchen disco vibe to it. I’ve watched recordings of the live set up on TikTok, and it feels like being invited to someone’s living room to watch them have fun jamming with their besties.

Having listened to her album Some Things Never Leave four times over on my last long-haul flight, this single marks an emotional change in aesthetic for Annabelle. Whilst maintaining a signature music style, this track feels undoubtedly more upbeat and hopeful compared to a lot of her previous releases.

I’m excited to hear more from Annabelle throughout the year, and I’m hoping to catch her on tour as soon as possible. Definitely a modern classic, this is a name that will be around for quite a while.

Whatever You Wanna is out now.
