Declan Casey and Dakota Simpson share vocals beautifully in their new single Texas; the first release from Swindon four-piece Better Heaven. Having worked together previously as MOON; Dakota Simpson, Declan Casey, Eddie Witcomb and Jon Snape seem to have evolved their sound with harmonious in-sync vocals complemented by a warm, washed-out backdrop of dreamy guitars. Declan’s vocal range offers some grit alongside Dakota’s more ethereal approach, which makes for a dream match.

Having recorded the track back in September of 2023, Texas is a personal look into the long term experiences that can come from taking anti-depressants in particular looking at how your emotions can feel — or lack of — after coming off of them. The rest of the lyrics came into play after focusing on this one particular line: “I don’t wanna be here but good god / don’t wanna be alone”. A minute into the track — when Dakota joins on vocals — you can see why they have chosen Texas as their first release: the mix of harmonies, gritty guitar solos and emotive storytelling would make it a real crowd pleaser atmospherically when played live.

Better Heaven are at an exciting time where creativity is front and centre; honing their sound, but you already get a sense that they know exactly what they are doing and where they want to take it. With support from BBC introducing and This Feeling, as well as recording Texas with producer and musician Tom Rees (Buzzard, Buzzard, Buzzard and The Bug Club) and mastered by Matt Colton at Metropolis Studios (Arctic Monkeys, Blur, Thom Yorke), Better Heaven are creating waves and we’d rather like to ride it with them!
