The LA-based duo deliver a doomy, sludgy ballad harking back to their roots, full of haunting ambience and wailing licks.

2022 heralded their full-length debut, Admire, and now the American noise duo are back with their new track Cosmic. This dirgey, body-dragging ballad owes as much to old-school doom metal as it does modern-day psych-rock and noise. In just one track, GHXST have built up a musical sermon that feels ripe for the live environment, complete with discordant guitar and sparse, wailing choruses.

It’s undeniably on the alternative side of the aisle, and just as well: that’s long been the breeding ground for some of the best experimental rock out there. There’s an impending sense of doom running all the way through Cosmic, fitting given the title, which feeds soundscapes of distant Eldritch threats and impossibly vast spans of emptiness; an impressive feat for just four minutes.

Cosmic is out now.
