North-London artist Hohnen Ford has emerged in recent years as an undeniable talent. Her discography thus far is impressive, including a duet with folk star Birdy and a feature on the compilation album Chet Baker Re:imagined. She’s toured with Wasia Project, Orla Gartland and most recently as a special guest support for FINNEAS on his UK tour. She has become known for her deeply emotive songwriting and expansive sonic worlds, blending the sounds of jazz, folk and classic songwriting to create something wholly her own.

Ford’s new release, Ordinary, is anything but. Ordinary is an honest and vulnerable track, evoking a battle to keep connected with your sense of self in the flurry of an early relationship. Describing the track, Ford says, “Ordinary is about your world turning upside down with a love that isn’t possible to sustain”.

On the single cover, Ford is a blur, racing across a field, white skirt billowing behind her, perfectly encapsulating the rush and disorientation she describes in the track.

She sings about the brief moments of feeling illuminated by another person, and then a darkness, passing time without them. Ford explains Ordinary emerged from “a feeling of smallness without the person that lights you up. The rollercoaster of early love when you feel without them you’re not enough, and you’re hanging on their coattails to be seen again”.

Ford’s Ordinary is a track that will sit proudly on your Mitski-infused, sad girl, indie-folk playlist.

Ordinary is out now via Giant Music.
