Birmingham indie-rock four-piece overpass have been ones to watch for several years now. From their addictive EPs to their high impact live shows, they’ve comfortably sat at the forefront of the UK’s rising band scene. But now, on their latest single Union Station, it feels like the quartet are well and truly coming into their own.

Defined by its bold vulnerability and palpable sense of urgency, the track sharpens overpass’ already melodic and emotionally driven indie-rock sound into something even more direct and heartfelt. Inspired by the phrase “it’s a dog-eat-dog world”, it explores the unsettling idea that life is just one big competition, capturing that anxiety with both clarity and emotional weight.

From the opening moments, Union Station is propelled by a guitar riff that never outstays its welcome. At the same time, the driving chug of the rhythm section mirrors the high-speed chaos of a busy train station — the very place frontman Max Newbold describes as “the place you run to when you’ve mentally checked out.”

Themes of growing up, making mistakes and not having it all figured out shine through in the band’s trademark heart-on-sleeve songwriting. Candid and unguarded, the lyrics are matched by what is arguably Newbold’s most impressive vocal performance to date. Swinging between weighty highs and lows, his voice carries the emotional pressure that powers the track.

As the first single to be released from their upcoming debut album Elsewhere, Always — set for release June 5th — Union Station feels like a defining moment for this Brummie band. Much like their huge choruses, the sky genuinely feels like the limit for these four.

Elsewhere, Always is out June 5th via Communion Records. Pre-order the album here.
