Renny Conti announces new album ‘Split Second’
It follows the acclaimed songwriter’s 2025 self-titled debut album.
Renny Conti has a flurry of announcements for us. First of all, the acclaimed Brooklyn-based songwriter has signed to the esteemed Mom & Pop record label. Secondly, his sophomore album Split Second is landing on September 25th. Next, the album’s lead single Impossible Truth is out. Last, but certainly not least, he’s bringing his band out to the UK/EU for a stream of upcoming shows and festival appearances in September.
If all that sounds exciting, then it’s nothing compared to actually diving headfirst into Impossible Truth itself. It’s full of energy and dripping in hooks. It drives along at will, with the trainlike drums powering the song forwards at all times. Conti’s vocals on the verses are racing to keep up with that same relentless yet conversational vocal style that’s perhaps best done by Adrianne Lenker during Big Thief’s more raucous material.
As soon as Impossible Truth lands at its massive chorus, everything opens up. Conti’s take a more tuneful, Elliott Smith-inspired turn. The guitars screech and burn. The production is excellent as the acoustic guitars never get lost in the mix, even when the electric guitars are wailing, and the drums are crashing all around.
Eventually, the song breaks down, and all that’s left is a strummed acoustic guitar as Conti laments in the song that “it’s an impossible truth.”
Conti sounds like a lot of things on his latest single, but defeated is certainly not one of them. Impossible Truth is spirited, impassioned and, best of all, simply impossible to get out of your head. Conti may be facing an impossible truth himself, but the cold, hard truth underneath is that he’s back and armed with another killer collection of songs.
