Jack Kaye goes solo with debut single ‘Dora’
The Magic Gang frontman goes it alone two years after the band’s farewell tour.
It’s been two very long years since The Magic Gang closed the curtain on their time as a band, playing to a mesmerised (and sold out) crowd at London’s Roundhouse, before playing Dot to Dot for the last time that same week.
It’s hard to believe it’s been nine years since I saw the band live for the first time, cramped into St Albans’ The Horn, shoulder to shoulder with everyone else there to catch one of the buzziest bands at the time. Since then, they released two studio albums, covered the Arthur theme song and snuck their way to eighth on my most-streamed artists of all time.
I still have a lot of love and a lot of time for the band, considering they are one of few bands my mum actually enjoys — and she’s very hard to please. It’s no surprise, then, that Jack Kaye’s first solo outing would fill that hole they left when they said goodbye two years ago.
Although it’s hard to shake the band you’ve left behind, Jack sheds his frontman skin and takes all of the spotlight, and rightfully so. Dora is a catchy, charming track, detailing a man who he describes as a “piece of work,” commentary based loosely on his friend’s relationship. Shaking off the writer’s block that followed when the band went their separate ways, Jack has delivered an exceptional indie pop song right on time for summer.
Jack will play The George Tavern on September 9th. Grab a ticket here.
Dora is out now via Fascination Street Records.
