ferb embrace ambition on sprawling new single ‘Provence’

Tense, expansive and affecting, ‘Provence’ showcases ferb at their most ambitious yet.

South London alt-rockers ferb have returned with Provence — their first release of the year and an entirely captivating listen.

Beginning in a place of vulnerability and longing, Provence opens with tense guitar strums and candid vocals that gradually draw listeners into its shadowy world. Despite stretching beyond the five-minute mark, the track remains remarkably cohesive throughout, guided by a clear artistic vision and a strong sense of purpose.

From these understated beginnings, thudding drums, driving bass and increasingly expansive guitar work steadily broaden the song’s emotional scope and sonic palette. With each passing minute, the arrangement grows richer, more dramatic and more intense, with the commanding guitar work serving as a constant focal point.

While there are plenty of lovely guitar licks woven throughout, it’s the immense build of the track’s second half that leaves the deepest impression. As tension escalates, it becomes easy to imagine Provence thriving in a live setting – mosh pits opening up, arms raised and voices joined together, belting every word back at the band.

Against this swelling instrumental backdrop, the chorus takes on a sharper, more bitter edge. Exploring both the tenderness of romantic yearning and the darker realisations that can accompany it, ferb confidently balance emotional vulnerability with simmering resentment before finally surging into overdrive.

On their latest single, ferb sound like a band fully committing to their ambitions, and crucially, those ambitions feel earned. Not only do they possess the songwriting ability and musical chops to support their grander ideas, but they also have a distinct identity, which is what makes Provence such a compelling listen.

Provence is out now.
