Jeepster arrive with debut single ‘Better Than One’
The Birmingham-based four-piece’s debut is soaked in ‘60s nostalgia.
Jeepster have arrived with their debut single Better Than One. The song is a collaboration between Birmingham-based songwriters Ed Quigley and Theo Charlton. It’s a luscious, infectious slice of sixties-inspired power pop that crams all of the classic hallmarks of the genre into less than three sweet minutes. It kicks straight in with an onslaught of early Beatles-inspired melody and harmony. Better Than One sounds joyful. Just one listen is enough to have this song whirling around in your head for days on end.
The song, recorded in a single day in a home studio, is wonderfully produced; the guitars and vocals absolutely shine. The band are certainly following the trail set by bands like The Lemon Twigs, who produce songs that rekindle the spirit of mid-sixties Beatles and The Beach Boys songs.
Jeepster also squeeze in a wedge of early-seventies Big Star with energetic drums and a short but sweet guitar solo. It’s all incredibly lush. The vocal harmonies sound perfect, and the chorus is just irresistible.
At the end of the song, the outro almost seems to collapse in on itself as the song abruptly fades out. There is always a place in my heart for sub-three-minute sugary sweet retro pop songs, and Better Than One hits all of the marks. As with The Lemon Twigs, it would be great to see if Jeepster are able to take this classic sound and add more unique and distinct touches to it.
Since recording Better Than One, Quigley and Charlton have recruited Kate Bemand on bass and vocals and Hamish Campbell-Legg on drums to form a formidable four-piece. They promise a batch of original songs are on the way soon. If Better Than One is any indication, there will be plenty more Jeepster melodies rolling around in our heads in the months to come.
Better Than One is out July 6th. Keep up-to-date with Jeepster here.
