Joyeria shares brooding single ‘The Curse’
‘The Curse’ is the latest single to be released from Joyeria’s upcoming debut album, which is set for release July 31st.
The latest single from Joyeria’s upcoming debut album Decay Decay Decay has just landed. The single, titled The Curse, is an unsettling and brooding take on the human condition and the messiness that encapsulates it. The band’s frontman, known only as Joy, explained that the song is about how “you can’t bypass the work and the mess it takes to be human.”Musically, the song takes plenty of sonic cues from Pavement’s seminal debut album Slanted & Enchanted with its electrifying guitar playing and haunting melodies. Joy’s vocal sounds like he’s taken Tom Waits’ low, grumbling growl and smashed it against David Berman’s plain spoken and dry delivery.
Just when you feel comfortable with the musical parameters that The Curse exists within, Joyeria shocks the life out of you with explosions of abrasive, cacophonous electric guitars that seem to interject at will when you least expect it. What makes The Curse so captivating is how it manages to keep you on your toes and pack so much musical tension inside only two-and-a-half-minutes. The song ends with a frankly terrifying acapella section that seemingly stops the song dead before an onslaught of discordant feedbacking screeching guitars bring the song to a bloody end. The Curse is a musical onslaught and builds plenty of expectation for the upcoming album.
Like the single, the album, however will not be available on any streaming sites. Speaking about this decision, Joy said that “It makes my stomach turn think that every time I want to share or promote some music, painting, writing, photography etc... I need to involve some third-party tech company as an intermediary. If the system only rewards money and nepotism, it also means it can't be a meritocracy... so it therefore has no real artistic value." It’s no surprise that Joyeria is so fiercely protective of their artistic principles when you hear the raw energy and emotion on display on The Curse.
Joy was born in Poland, raised in Canada and now lives in London and recorded Decay Decay Decay in London on reel-to-reel tape in Radlicks Studios. No computers were used during the recording of the album whatsoever. Before the release of his debut album, the frontman is keen to ask us, “Do we still have the agency to choose a difficult, boring reality over the seduction of easy pleasure?” It’s one hell of a question but Joyeria isn’t content to settle for any less.
